How We Reviewed
Our review focuses on three key areas: performance, hardware and components, and construction. Gaming laptops need to have a long service life and the ability to withstand constant use. They must also perform well in terms of speed to really immerse the user in the gaming experience. Finally, the hardware and components on the laptop need to allow you to play anywhere away from home from the airport to the mall or the local café.
The HP Omen Gaming Laptop
To begin with, the new model has improved a lot on its predecessor. This new Omen’s ports are on the left side as well as the back. They include the USB 3.1 type A and C ports, HDMI, mini Displayport, headphone and microphone jacks, and an SD slot. It's also fitted with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card, which brings high definition to all the games you play. The older Omen models had the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860 graphics card.
HP has utilized their micro-edge bezels to create the illusion of a larger screen. Customers can choose 4K or 1080p resolutions, giving you crisp picture quality and a great depth in the immersion. This laptop is stutter-free and intuitive during a gaming session because it renders graphics smoothly. We have the NVIDIA G-sync technology to thank for that. With a refresh rate of 144Hz, the speeds on the Omen are impeccable.
Using the HP Omen gaming laptop on the move
While its build is not really svelte, it is quite portable, easily disappearing into a laptop bag. It's fitted with the Omen Command Center software, which allows you to stream games from your game library on your PC to wherever you are. Your PC could be at home and you at the office and the game stream feature will utilize the command center to bring your game to you.
The keyboard is RGB (has red, blue and green zones) and the back-lit keys show the colors clearly, enabling you to enjoy a smooth gaming experience even in the dark. The aluminum layer on the keyboard gives it an overall smooth feel. Each of the zones can be customized using the Omen Command Center to further make your game intuitive. An HP Omen gaming laptop is the perfect example of mobile computing, and it has six hours of mixed use on it. The chassis is faux carbon fiber with dimensions of 14.2 inches length, 10.4 inches width and a depth of 0.98 inches and the weight is only 5.4 pounds.
The Bottom Line
The performance of the HP Omen gaming laptop is enhanced by the NVIDIA G-sync technology and excellent configurations including 16 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU, and Intel Core i7 8750H. Complaints of a noisy fan are a thing of the past because with a little toggling you can reduce the fan speed and power, effectively lessening the noise. It also keeps cool during gaming sessions, and it has excellent anti-ghosting, allowing it to take multiple key commands simultaneously without mistakes. Unfortunately, the Thunderbolt 3 connectivity is only available on select models.

Unlike HP, which has had to build up a line of laptops just for gaming on top of its other regular laptops, Alienware is a dedicated gaming computer manufacturing company. In other words, they have been doing this longer. That's why at first glance, the Alienware 15 R4 design is everything. It is sleek with a light emanating from the alien head strategically placed on the outside of the lid. It is striking, to say the least.
Despite the screen’s display of pictures in bright, colorful hues, it does not have the NVIDIA G-sync technology to keep the graphics moving smoothly and stutter-free. The HP Omen has one up on the Alien Ware 15 R4 in that respect. However, the detail on screen is sharp and crisp enough that you can make out textures and patterns. It is heavier at 7.8 pounds with a width of 15. 3 inches, a depth of 12 inches and a height of an inch, certainly, a handful to carry around.
Its ports are lined along the rear and the side of the chassis just like on the Omen. The rear has the Ethernet, mini Displayport, the power port, and Alienware Graphics Amplifier port. While the side has a USB 3.1 port, microphone jack port, and a headset jack port as well. The Thunderbolt 3 port is a standard feature with this Alienware offering, which is not the case with the HP omen. It has a battery life of five hours with mixed use.
The Bottom Line
The Alienware 15 R4 has great processing speed that remains unaffected even when you have other applications running in the background. The display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 which accounts for the picture's clarity on this laptop. Similar to the Omen Command Center, the Alienware Command Center effectively helps you to customize your functions. You can customize your lighting and performance settings among other things.
It's fitted with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 MAX-Q GPU and 2.1-GHz Intel Core i7-8750H processor, which keeps its performance on par with the HP Omen.
- 15.6" Full HD Display With 1920x1080p Resolution
- Intel Core i7 6th Gen 6700HQ Quad Core (2.60GHz Processor to 3.5GHz with Turbo Boost), Graphics Card GeForce GTX 960M With 4GB dedicated video memory
- Storage 1TB HDD + 256GB SSD, 16 GB DDR4 RAM
- Backlit Keyboard, 720p Webcam, 10/100/1000Mbps, 802.11ac Wireless LAN, Bluetooth 4.0, JBL Speakers 2 x 2W + 1 x Subwoofer 3W
- 1 x HDMI 2 x USB 3.0 1 x USB 2.0, Windows 10 Home 64-Bit
Like HP, Lenovo is not a dedicated gaming computers manufacturer, but they are venturing into the market. The Lenovo 15-inch Y700 has a solid chassis with dimensions of 15.2 inches in width, 10.9 inches in depth and an inch in height. It weighs 5.7 pounds which is slightly heavier than the Omen’s 5.4 pounds. The display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080, guaranteeing you excellent picture clarity. Compared to the Omen’s NVIDIA GTX 10-series graphics card, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 seems to under-perform, but it still delivers a decently smooth rendering of the graphics.
It features the red and black colors that have become synonymous with keyboards of gaming computers, whereas Omen’s RGB keyboard is more colorful. Aesthetically, the Omen looks brighter and more interactive than the Lenovo Y700. The display lights up, impressively capturing the hues and contrasts with great clarity.
However, one thing that is most impressive on this laptop is its audio output. It has Dolby Sound and JBL speakers and a subwoofer at the bottom. The result is an excellent balance of sound and projection. It picks up even the minute details of a game’s audio. You can tweak the sound with these five audio settings: dynamic, gaming, music, movie and voice. It has a battery life of four to five hours with mixed use.
The Bottom Line
Compared to the HP Omen gaming laptop, this offering allows you to play the best games at decent settings, but not the highest settings. That means taxing games like Metro: Last Night will play pretty well but not as amazingly as it does on the HP Omen, where rendering brings every detail into focus. With the Intel Core i7-6700 CPU, this laptop allows you to continue gaming at impressive speeds even as other applications are running in the background.

It also comes in eight design options: True Fire, True Fire ORIGIN, Neurons, Battle-Tested, True Fire Atmos Blue, Shredder Green, Shredder Red, and Shredder Blue.
This model has the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 MAX-Q graphics card, guaranteeing you the very best in graphics rendering. The screen display of 4K is excellent for capturing detail during your game. Interestingly, the design is straightforward with features like the touchpad sitting right underneath the keyboard. It has refresh rates of 120Hz although it does have moments of tearing and stutters because it does not have the NVIDIA G-sync technology to help keep the screen stutter-free.
It comes with the Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor which gives it excellent speeds during gaming. The battery offers five hours of mixed use. The keyboard has excellent anti-ghosting, allowing it to accept multiple complicated gaming commands without missing a beat. It is an RGB keyboard with three zones that have adequate backlighting. The ports include two mini DisplayPort, HDMI, two USB 3.1 type C ports, microphone and headset jack ports. You also get Ethernet and an SD card reader.
The Bottom Line
The Origin EVO15-S offers similar customization options to the HP Omen gaming laptop. This laptop is very much in the same league as the HP Omen gaming laptop.
