The Lenovo Y510p is a powerful premium laptop in the budget range built for better performance with online gaming. This laptop is part of the Lenovo Y Series and was first released in 2013. Lenovo created the IdeaPad to contrast the classic ThinkPad to cater to gaming consumers rather than merely business users.

About Lenovo

Lenovo is a Chinese technology company founded in 1984 and was incorporated in 1984. As technology took a more prominent role in culture, so did Lenovo. By 2004, Lenovo was the most significant personal computer company in China, and they bought tech leader IBM in 2005.

Lenovo is headquartered in Beijing, China and has operations in over 60 countries around the world. The company's world-class facilities are in Beijing and North Carolina. The Lenovo company prides itself on innovation and holds over 6.500 patents and has earned over 100 design awards.

The IdeaPad

Gaming Graphics

The Lenovo IdeaPad features two gigabytes of double Nvidia GeForce GT755M graphics cards for more power when gaming. Lenovo installs one of the graphics cards within the chassis, while the other uses the Ultrabay modular system.

Intelligent Touchpad

Lenovo uses an Intelligent Touchpad on the Y510p as a vast improvement over previous models. The Intelligent Touchpad increases overall sensitivity, making for precision scrolling, rotating, and zooming functions. Chances are you'll probably still use a mouse, but the upgraded trackpad makes a mouse less of a necessity.

IBM's UltraBay modular system for swapping components as part of the deal when Lenovo bought IBM in 2005. The UltraBay system is a handy component to have on a gaming laptop. UltraBay, or a bay adapter, is a removable component that allows users to fit another video card, hard drive, fan, or optical drive.

The Y510p features JBL speakers with v4 audio certification and Dolby Home Theater compatibility for the most immersive sound experience when plugged in. The speakers deliver the same, crisp sound quality when used with or without headphones.

Lenovo's Y510p comes with an Accutype keyboard with backlighting to help navigate the board while engrossed in gameplay. The slightly rounded keys bring greater accuracy when blind typing and offer quick response.

Input and Output

Lenovo is still reliable in the input and output options department. This Lenovo laptop has a six-in-one card reader for SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC, MS, and MS-Pro. The Y510p has two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, RJ45 Gigabit LAN port, and VGA out. One of the USB 3.0 ports is an always-on port that allows for electronics charging even when the laptop is away from a power source.

Lenovo Y510p also features an integrated 720p HD webcam and two digital array microphones for clear communication.

Cool Metal Jacket

The Y510p is cool to touch even after hours of screen time because Lenovo makes it with a brushed metal casing. Including this high-quality exterior material isn't merely a matter of function over form: the laptop looks sleek and sophisticated and is resistant to wear.

Now that we've seen all the Y510p highlights, let's look at what Lenovo put under its hood. On paper, the Lenovo Y510 looks like it has all the makings of a reliable gaming computer, but we won't know until we dig a little deeper.

Processor and Memory

Lenovo put a 4th Generation Intel Core i7-4700MQ quad-core into the Y510p. Paired with the eight gigabytes of SDRAM, the dual graphics cards make for a secure gaming computer.

Display and Resolution

The Y510p is a 15.6-inch laptop with FHD LED glossy wedge display with 1920 x 1080 resolution and 16:9 wide-screen capabilities.

Hard Disk

The Y510p comes standard with an impressive 1TB hard drive and an 8GB hybrid drive to hold all media files without slowing down. Even when heavily loaded with data, the computer still has fast booting and loading times.

Battery Life

As with all gaming computers, the biggest downside is the short battery life. The Lenovo Y510p offers a decent amount of battery life and clocks in at around three to five hours of life when in heavy and consistent use.

Operating System

Lenovo IdeaPad comes with Windows 8.1 64 pre-installed. The 64-bit OS is crucial for handling gaming software and processes and helps the computer function even as multiple programs run on the desktop.

For communication, the Y510p has Bluetooth 4.0, Intel 7260 b/g/n wireless, and 1GB LAN.

Weight and Height

This Lenovo laptop weighs 5.95 pounds and measures 15.23-inches wide by 10.19-inches long by 1.4-inches deep.

The Lenovo Y510p is among the cheaper gaming laptops on the market today, which makes it a very attractive option for those who want the features without the price. Prices for the Lenovo Y510p have dropped and now range depending on where you buy it.

For this review, we looked at gaming laptops similar to the Y510p, which means similarly priced for the specs. If money isn't an object, you can spend thousands of dollars on a premier gaming computer.

How It Compares

Now that we've dissected the Lenovo Y510p to see what it's made of, we want to compare it to a few other laptops in the same category. To get the best deal, we have to see what the Y510p has that other gaming laptops do not. Here's what we're comparing:

  • 2019 Dell 15.6" Gaming Laptop
  • 2019 Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop
  • MSI GS65 Stealth-006 Gaming Laptop

Design Quality

The brushed metal design of the Y510p is a nice touch and makes the computer look like a much more expensive model. There isn't anything flashy about the design, but we appreciate that with a laptop. We also appreciate that Lenovo isn't hopping on the fewer ports bandwagon. In gaming, we need those ports, and we don't want to buy an extension separate from the computer every time a company makes a shift.

One complaint we have about the design is the placement for the USB ports because we can't get a proper angle with the mouse cord. Fortunately, most of us use wireless mice these days, so this issue isn't that significant.

Lenovo gives a standard one-year warranty on the Y510p IdeaPad. This warranty covers manufacturer's defects.

This laptop features an 8th Generation Intel Core i5-8300H quad-core processor and 16GB DDR memory for quick on the uptake performance. The laptop has a 1TB HDD hard drive and a 512GB of solid-state-drive for a fully loaded experience that will never slow you down.

For graphics, this Dell gaming laptop features Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 into play for high-definition imagery on the wide-screen display. Dell's FHD IPS Gaming Laptop has a 15.6-inch surface equipped with an anti-glare back-lit LED. The laptop features one USB 3.1, two SuperSpeed USB 3.1 Type-A, HDMI 2.0 ports, headphones and microphone jack, and an RJ45 gigabit ethernet port.

This black Dell model weighs 5.57 pounds and measures 15-inches by 10.2-inches by .09-inches and has an average battery life of three to five hours. Microsoft Windows Home comes pre-installed on this Dell laptop.

Design Quality

The Dell FHD IPS Gaming Laptop is a sleek looking laptop with an attractive curve to angle balance. The black casing is smudge-proof and durable, but the plastic material is less durable than a metal body. The machine comes with enough storage to keep things moving along, even when using several apps at once.

We wish Dell would have loaded a 64-bit Windows OS on this laptop because we find that it is necessary for gaming. Booting times are a little slower with this Dell model than for the Lenovo Y510, but the battery lasts longer on average. Overall, the Dell FHD IPS is a good gaming laptop for the price.

Dell provides a limited one-year warranty for the FHD IPS Gaming Computer that covers any issues with the design or construction of the laptop from its end.

  • 1TB storage
  • Long battery life
  • Cost-effective

  • Less durable body design
  • Slower boot times than Lenovo
  • Comes with Windows Home

The Acer Predator Helios is a Gaming Laptop introduced in 2019. The 15.6-inch laptop has an FHD IPS micro-edge backlit WLED and Corning Gorilla Glass NBT for supreme durability and clarity. Predator Helios uses Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics to bring the games to life right before your eyes.

Acer's Predator Helios contains a 9th Generation Intel 6-core i7 processor and 32GB RAM for problem-free performance every time you play. Acer upgraded the hard drive in the Predator Helios to 512GB PCle SSD, which provides ample storage for game time plus.

Predator Helios 300 has a fully integrated webcam and wireless connectivity through 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wave 2, and Bluetooth 5.0. The 4-cell 48Wh battery lasts between one and two hours on average.

Ports in the Predator Helios include three USB 3.0, SD card reader, HDMI, USB-C 3.1, and a headphone and microphone combination jack. This petite gaming laptop weighs 5.51 pounds and measures 15-inches by 10-inches by 0.9-inches and comes with Windows 10 Home pre-installed.

Design Quality

The exterior shape and line work of the Predator Helios 300 is a sight to behold. It looks like a beast and performs just as well. Acer makes the body from durable plastic instead of metal, but it's sturdy and resistant to scratches, chips, and signs of use.

The biggest problems with the Acer Predator 300 are its limited storage capacity and battery life. Although this laptop is a powerhouse for the price, nailing these two elements are necessary for a gaming computer. With an unplugged battery life lasting fewer than two hours on average, Predator Helios 300 was the shortest battery life of any gaming laptop we reviewed.

Battery and storage aside, we don't have many complaints about this rig. It functions like much more expensive gaming computers in terms of speed and responsiveness. It's more expensive than the Lenovo Y510p and doesn't have as much storage, but is still one of the best buys for entry-level gaming.

Acer gives a limited one-year warranty for the Predator Helios 300. The warranty only covers issues that Acer is responsible for, like hardware issues not related to external causes.

It features Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 6G GDDR6 graphics and an FHD anti-glare wide-angle display boasting a refresh rate of 144Hz. MSI gives this gaming laptop a 512GB NVMe solid-state-drive, and 16GB RAM. The thin bezel Stealth-006 has a 9th Generation Intel Core i7 processor for improved performance.

MSI Stealth-006 celebrates an impeccable gaming laptop battery life of up to eight hours of uninterrupted use, while unplugged. MSI designed the Whirlwind Blade fans in the Stealth-006 to most circulate air pressure and airflow most effectively. This system keeps the machine cool and functioning no matter how long you use it.

The Stealth-006 has a variety of useful ports, including two USB-A, USB-C with Thunderbolt 3 support, a mini display port, an HDMI port, an ethernet jack, microphone, and headphone jacks. MSI appropriately places the built-in webcam on the top bezel.

Design Quality

Our first impression of the MSI Stealth-006 was that it looks like the Ferrari of gaming laptops. It's not flashy, but it exudes a quiet dominance when perched on the top of a desk. It's well-made and can endure a beating. The Stealth-006 weighs less than any of the other gaming laptops we reviewed, which makes it ideal for toting around.

MSI fits the Stealth-006 with GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU, which serves us well when getting interactive in gameplay. We can't rave enough about the battery life. We found that the eight-hour claims were on-point; the Stealth-006 lasts substantially longer than most gaming computers when away from a power source.

Our only critique is that for the price, we wish that MSI had upped the storage capacity. This laptop has a sufficient 512 gigabytes, but we strive for that terabyte threshold.

MSI offers the customary limited one-year warranty for the Stealth-006 Gaming Laptop. They'll cover any manufacturer's defect within that time frame.

  • Superior battery life
  • VR ready
  • 144Hz display
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Classy design
  • Whirlwind Blade fans keep it cool

  • Less storage capacity

After taking a closer look at the Lenovo Y510p gaming computers, we are torn. The laptop has several features superior to its competitors, including 1TB of storage and a brushed metal body, but it's not the best option on the market. Whereas the 2019 Lenovo IdeaPad has the modular system for the second graphics card and celebrates fast running and response speeds, a few of the more expensive competitors are better gaming computers overall.

What it comes down to is price. The Y510p was a top of the line offering when Lenovo introduced it, but technology is always improving. The best reason to buy the Lenovo Y510p is that you'll get a quality machine for substantially less than the introductory price. This option isn't appealing to some gamers, but for others, it's an incredible deal.

The gaming laptop market is competitive, and it takes a lot to be the best of the best. Although the Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p isn't the absolute best laptop on current the market, it still has a lot to offer. Now that the prices for the Lenovo Y510p have dropped, budget shoppers can now own a high-quality and durable gaming laptop. For a budget to an entry-level gaming laptop, the Y510p is one of our top recommendations and we give it four out of five stars.
